German WW2 Military Vehicles |
There are many different types of military ground vehicles designed for specific uses in various arenas of conflict, such as tanks and self propelled guns, but here we are focusing mainly on German World War II utility, recon & personnel vehicles which carry limited or no weaponry. |
Opel Blitz From the beginning of WWII the Opel Blitz 3.6 ton version truck was extensively utilized. Various models were developed to cope with different conditions including the Blitz A, a four wheel drive for difficult road conditions. Also a half track version SDKFZ3 based on the British Universal Carrier. |
The medium-weight versions originally were equipped with a flathead 68 HP petrol engine coming from the 1930 GM Buick Marquette, replaced in 1937 with a modern overhead valve 75 HP straight-six engine also used in Opel Admiral passenger cars. |
Raupenschlepper Ost The translation of the name is 'Caterpillar Tractor East'. It was basically a truck on tracks which was necessary for getting supplies & heavy weaponry to the Soviet frontlines through thick mud & snow. The same chassis was also later used for a self-propelled antitank vehicle armed with a PaK 40 gun. |
Engine: Steyr V8 3.5l / 8-cyl Petrol. 85 hp or a 66 hp Deutz diesel air-cooled engine. Transmission: 4 forward, 1 reverse Suspension: 4 steel disk wheels on each side, mounted in pairs with elliptic springs. Range: 300 mi / 480 km Speed: 18 mph / 30 km/h |
Volkswagen Kubelwagen Type 62 Designed by Ferdinand Porsche especially for military use, this vehicle was the German answer to the US Jeep. Although a 4x4 was prototyped, only a 2 wheel drive was adopted, but was surprisingly efficient in poor road conditions with its high ground clearance & smooth underside. A total of 50,435 were built during the war years. |
Engine: Air-cooled flat four, 985 cc. 23.5 bhp or from 1943 1131 cc. 25 bhp Transmission: 4 forward, 1 reverse & self locking differential. Weight: 715 kg / 1,576 lbs Speed: 50 mph / 80 km/h |
Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen Based on the Kubelwagen, this amphibious version had 4 wheel drive only on first & reverse gears as introduced on the prototypes & a redesigned underside making it suitable for use on water. A screw propeller which could be directly coupled to the crankshaft was lowered into the water to give it propulsion. The road wheels via the normal steering wheel acted as rudders. |
Engine:
4-cyl.
boxer, air cooled Transmission: 4 forward, 1 reverse & 2 speed transfer case. Length: 382.5 cm / 150.6 in Width: 148 cm / 58.3 in Height: 161.5 cm / 63.6 in |
BMW R75 Motorcycle & Sidecar Requested by the German Army, this machine went into production with a twin 750cc OHV engine which carried on to power civilian motorcycles like the R51/3, R67 and R68 after the war. The wheel of the sidecar was connected to the rear drive wheel of the motorcycle making the machine very effective in poor driving conditions. |
Engine: 745 cc flat-twin (OHV) Bore / Stroke: 78 mm × 78 mm / 3.1 in × 3.1 in. Weight: 420 kg (930 lb) Production: 1941–1946 Manufactured: approx 20,000 |
Maultier or Sd.Kfz. 3 This half tracked vehicle was based on the Opel Blitz & designed to effect deliveries primarily to the Soviet frontline in all weather conditions. Whilst coming up short on the mobility of purpose built half tracks they were much more economical to build and sufficiently effective from 1943 onwards. A version of the Maultier trucks was produced, the SdKfz 4, with an armored body. |
Engine: 3.6-litre 6-cyl petrol - Opel Blitz Suspension: The Carden Lloyd type suspension employed by the Panzer I was practically identical to the light tank track system used on the Universal and Bren-gun carriers Speed: 38 km/h Weight: 3,930 kg / 8,660 lb |
Sd.Kfz. 251 Personnel Carrier With 14.5mm armor plating and carrying a MG 34 or MG 42 machine gun, this version was designed to carry a squad of 10 men into the battlefield & protect them from light arms fire. Many variants were produced including with anti-aircraft guns, light howitzers, anti-tank guns and mortars. |
