Italian WW2 Military Vehicles

Prior to WW2 all Italian truck manufacturers were required by law to make their trucks to basic military specifications in the event that civilian vehicles would need to be conscripted for the war effort. Below are a few examples of Italian military vehicles used in WW2, along with basic technical data.

Lancia 1Z / IZM

Designed originally for use in WW1, some of these vehicles saw limited action at the beginning of WW2. A slightly modified version was made in 1918, this was designated the 1ZM. The major difference between the 1Z and 1ZM was that the 1ZM did not have the top turret with the extra machine gun.

SPA Viberti AS.42 Sahariana

A rear engined, four wheel steering recon vehicle made in Italy & used by Hungary mainly for desert operations. This vehicle was regarded as excellent & was even used by the British, but unfortunately it was expensive to manufacture & complicated to maintain.

Alfa Romeo 800 Truck

This was heavy truck manufactured in Italy was produced between 1940 - 1947 for use by the Italian Military in WW2, after the war it was adapted for civilian use. It was also extensively used by the Hungarian motorized & logistics divisions.

Alfa Romeo 500 Truck

This is a 3 ton class truck, manufactured in Italy from 1937 to 1945. The range included a diesel-powered 75 hp (56 kW) version 500RE, petrol version 500B and gas version 500BR. The chassis was also adapted to take bus and fire fighting bodies.

Fiat 666 Heavy Truck

Commonly used by the Italian Army for transporting troops to frontline positions. Originally it had rear two wheel drive, but later a 4 x 4 was introduced & this model was designated the 666NM. This vehicle was unusual for the time as it had the engine totally enclosed in the cabin space.

Moto Guzzi 500 TriAlce

A three wheeler motorcycle that was produced for the Italian military which came in three variations - single seat, double seat & sidecar. The frame supported a wooden box of 500 kg capacity size 1300 × 960 × 350 mm. This was the only vehicle in the motorized divisions that was air transportable.

Engine: Air cooled, single cylinder 500cc.
