There are many different types of military ground vehicles designed for specific uses in various arenas of conflict, such as tanks and self propelled guns, but here we are focusing mainly on Soviet World War II utility, recon & personnel vehicles which carry limited or no weaponry.

GAZ BA 64 Scout Car

With armoring & Degtyaryov machine gun or PTRD anti-tank rifle added it was similar to the German sdkfz-234, one of which was captured, studied & the design was based. During the war the BA 64, supplied by Russia, was also used by Polish & Czech forces.

GAZ 67 & 67B

A general purpose utility vehicle based on the American Jeep. Production of the GAZ 67 commenced in 1943 but was improved a year later by the 67B which had a wider track for improved stability and a larger fuel tank to give it a better operational range.

ZIS 5 / ZIS 5V Truck

Manufactured in the Moscow ZIS factory this truck alongside the GAZ AA (basically the Ford AA truck) was the main light cargo truck the Soviets used from 1932 until 1958. Due to shortages of raw materials in 1942 WW2, the ZIS 5 became lighter, less robust & was known as the ZIS 5V.

GAZ 46 Amphibious Vehicle

Not actually manufactured until 1952, but well worth a mention in this section, this vehicle was the first amphibious vehicle to be produced in the Soviet Union. It used the mechanicals & engine / passenger layout from the GAZ 69 Jeep type vehicles but with the steel hull welded to the chassis for greater buoyancy.

Komintern Artillery Tractor

Based on the chassis / tracks of the T24 tank this vehicle was used for hauling medium size artillery pieces across the country in poor weather and bad ground conditions. Approximately 2000 of these tractors were built between 1935 & 1941 & proved to be very successful.
